Vayu is the god of the winds . He is depicted crowned and four-armed and riding on his antelope vahana. In his upper two hands he carries a pennant (right) and club (left). His lower two hands are held in abhayamudra (right) and varadamudra (left). His presence is felt as the blowing breeze – Pavana , the pure . He infuses purity in the atmosphere and is the life giving breath . He carries the rain cloud and is worshipped for rain along with Indra . During thunder storms he is worshipped to avert the disaster caused by lightning . Speed and agility are his attributes . His sounds have been heard, but his form is rare to see . His son is the popular god Hanuman, the devotee of Shri Rama , who is the worshipped as sankata-mochana or one who delivers from all evils .
Vayu is a martial, kinglike, handsome god who rides a chariot drawn by a pair of red or purple horses and moves like the roar of the wind . He is dressed in white and carries a white flag . His fury creates hurricanes and cyclones . Other names of Vayu dev or wind are as , Vata, pavan, anila, Parjanya, marut, Air,etc.
