varun1Varuna is the celestial Vedic god of the sky . He is responsible for maintaining the divine order of the universe . He became the lord of the rivers and oceans, when Indra assumed more importance . In the Vedas he is said to be the creator and sustainer of the universe . He administers the cosmic law . Day and night appear at his command and the rivers flow according to his plans . Varuna punishes sin and falsehood . He keeps a watch on everyone through the Sun, who is considered to be his eye . Morality and ethics fall under his domain . He is the most important of the lower celestial deities called Adityas . He is guardian of the west quarter and one of the nakshatra or lunar mansions . He is four faced, with a thousand eyes . He has the color of snow and appears in a golden mantle . He carries a rope in his hand, to bind sinners with, symbolic of a man being restrained by his sins . Varuna is said to be gracious even to sinners . In the Mahabharata , he is lord of the waves and the rivers, the god of fluidity and movement . Being a god of the rivers, he is propitiated to avert drought and floods . Other names of Varuna are as,  Ambuja, Jalapati, Kesa, Uddama, Yadah- pati , Jaldev, .
